Welcome

Welcome to the Ving Tsun Workgroup, a group based in the heart of Marin County and comprised of like-minded individuals who are committed to maintaining a high quality training environment in which to develop skill in the Ving Tsun system of martial arts.

What is Ving Tsun?
Ving Tsun (pronounced and often spelled “wing chun”) is a unique martial art that places a strong emphasis on the development of simple, direct, and efficient reactions in an individual in the case of a violent encounter. The nature of the training is very “hands-on,” and as a result the body is programmed to react naturally and effectively to stimuli even when under physical or mental stress. Ving Tsun is typically classified as a fast and powerful close-range martial art.

Why Train Ving Tsun?
People train in the Ving Tsun system for many reasons. At its core, Ving Tsun offers usable self preservation skills if one should ever have need for such skills. It is also an excellent mastery pursuit, meaning that it can continue to be honed for a lifetime if one so wishes. The system has been designed to develop skills relatively quickly, but still offers a depth of study to fully explore its intricacies over as long a period of time as one desires. As a result, a variety of people find the training beneficial for multiple reasons. Some like it purely for the useful physical skills they develop, others are attracted to the intellectual nature of the concepts. Truly, whereas Ving Tsun claims no preexisting philosophy as its doctrine, the analytical nature of the system teaches concepts that can extend beyond exclusively fighting, and benefit one in his or her daily life as well.

What is the Ving Tsun Workgroup?
The Ving Tsun Workgroup was born of necessity. I am a student of the system who began participating in live-in training with Sifu Gary Lam several years ago. Though flying out of town for extended trips is a necessary part of my education and development in the system, it is also absolutely critical to continue to train on a daily basis to truly develop skill. On the recommendation of my Sifu, I started a modest sized workgroup to develop quality Wong Shun Leung/Gary Lam training in Marin County. We have continued to maintain a dedicated group ever since, and it has been my distinct honor and pleasure to share what I know with others who have a similar interest. I do not claim to be a master of this system, only a serious student who maintains a genuine interest and commitment to my development and the development of those around me. As for credentials, I am Level One certified in the Gary Lam system of Ving Tsun and have practiced martial arts for the last thirteen years.

How do I join the Ving Tsun Workgroup?
Contact me at jeff@vingtsunworkgroup.com. Though enrollment alternates periodically between being open and closed (to ensure that everyone gets the attention they deserve), we are always looking for people interested in the system. There is no significant monetary gain on my part, so we are only interested in people with a genuine desire to learn. No applicants under 18 years old please.
